The OET was developed primarily to assess the English language proficiency of foreign healthcare professionals desiring to work in an English-speaking setting and is the culmination of more than 30 years of research and practice.The OET was developed in the late 1980s and produced under contract for the Australian Government. At the University of Melbourne, it was developed by Professor Tim McNamara, one of the original IELTS developers. Since then, it has undergone routine evaluation and assessment, overseen by the Language Testing Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, to ensure that it is still helpful today. LTRC is a global leader in language evaluation research and development. Current owners of the exam are Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment and Cambridge English Language Assessment, the latter of which also owns IELTS.
