The OET was created in the late 1980s and produced for the Australian Government under contract. Professor Tim McNamara, one of the original IELTS developers, created it at the University of Melbourne. In order to make sure it is still useful today, it has undergone regular evaluation and assessment since that time, led by the Language Testing Research Centre at the University of Melbourne. In terms of language evaluation research and development, LTRC is a world authority. The test is now owned by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment, a partnership between the prestigious and Cambridge English Language Assessment, which also owns IELTS. The OET, which is the result of more than 30 years of research and practice, is specifically created to evaluate the English language proficiency of foreign healthcare professionals wishing to work in an English-speaking environment.
